  1. 3dcd.exe is the name of the shell program which you run to provide simple
  2. and easy access to the Doom CD.  However, not all the materiel is available
  3. directly from the shell program.  For one thing, none of the Deathmatch
  4. missions are available from the shell.  They ARE on the CD, but the shell
  5. program is not smart enough to figure out network or modem Doom configs
  6. so I decided not to add them.  Graphics patches are not available from the
  7. shell, nor Dehacked patches.  The methods for installing these varied too
  8. much for me to write a simple interface for them.  You'll have to play with 
  9. them on your own by unzipping each file to a temporary directory and reading 
  10. the instructions that go with each file (if available).  The editors are
  11. not available from the shell, nor the DOOM front end programs.  You'll have 
  12. to look at the files.bbs listing in the root directory of the CD-ROM to 
  13. determine what program you wish to find, then unzip that program from the 
  14. CD-ROM to a temporary directory on your hard drive and read the instructions.

  16. For those who find a particular file available from the shell program too
  17. objectionable for their children to play, there is an editor.exe program in
  18. the 3dcd directory which will allow you to delete descriptions such that
  19. they will no longer be available from the menu.  The editor will also
  20. let you add new music and sound wads to your Doom or Doom2 data files if you
  21. get something you like which isn't on the CD.

  23. The most objectionable files I know of are the sound files.  Several of these
  24. emphasize repeated obscenities which I don't much like but some people do.
  25. The spoken obscenities cover the gamut, so don't be surprised or angry when
  26. you hear something offensive when you load one of these.  There are several
  27. pretty good sound addons as well, so just try 'em 'till you find what you
  28. like!

  30. Finally, you will note there is a directory on the CD called NEWSTUFF.
  31. This is where I put stuff I got at the very last minute which I thought you'd
  32. like to play with but didn't have time to add to the shell program.
  33. There's no files.bbs listing for the NEWSTUFF directory so you sysops will
  34. have to make your own!

  36. One last note about the 3DCD shell program.  If a wad file loads but the game
  37. doesn't appear any different from the original, there are two possibilities:
  38.         
  39.         (1)  The wad file is for a map higher than the first mission, so
  40.         use the IDCLEV command to warp to the correct location;
  41.  
  42.         (2)  The wad file is not of the correct type.  I've already been told
  43.         that a few of the missions in the Doom2 directories are mislabeled
  44.         so you may have to put a few missions into the Doom1 directory.  I
  45.         like using the program WADDIR which tells me everything I need to
  46.         know about a WAD file very quickly and easily.

  48. Don't forget to set up your default paths to your games BEFORE you select
  49. and run a mission or it may not work!  The CD-ROM drive letter default is F:
  50. and the hard drive letter default is C:.  It's the second option of the
  51. 3DCD shell program coming up next!
